The result of their work, Britannia Illustrata: or Views of Several of the Royal Palaces as also of the Principal Seats of the Nobility and Gentry of Great Britain, Curiously Engraven on 80 Copper Plates (1707, published in the winter of 1708–09; later, in 1715, released as Le Nouveau Théâtre de La Grande Bretagne; the 1724 edition was published by Joseph Smith) is considered to be the most important publication among historic architectural surveys and treatises in the 18th century.

The British Museum in London has the 1724 version of this print published by Joseph Smith (Registration number M,21.40).

Longleat, Wiltshire has been the seat of the Tynne family since 1541. It is widely considered to be one of the greatest achievements in Elizabethan architecture in England. After the original priory was destroyed by a fire in 1567, Sir John Tynne (1515-1580) is thought to have employed the architect Robert Smythson to design the building and it took 12 years to complete the construction. Alterations were carried out in 1707 by Christopher Wren. (For additional information, see page 69 of the Christie’s catalog for the July 9, 2015 sale in London The Taste of Royal Court)

The Vachells had resided in the Reading area from the 13th century, settling at Coley. The family’s ancient connexion with Coley was terminated in 1727 when the second son of Tanfield Vachell, William, sold the estate to Colonel Richard Thompson.

The hand-written inscription on the back support of the frame:

Coley House, Built by Tanfield Vachell (died 1705), M.P. for Reading and High Sheriff of Berkshire, about the close of the 17th century, replacing the old Manor House, which had been plundered and partially demolished during that unsettled time which immediately preceeded the restoration of Charles II in 1660. Tanfield Vachell’s son, William Vachell, sold Coley House in 1727. Later in the 18th century it was burned down. Only the pigeon-house, seen in this print, has survived to the present day.

Artist Robert Hancock (1730-1817)
Publisher / Place of publication “Engraved for Moore’s Voyages & Travels”
Title The most surprising CATARACT of NIAGARA in Canada

Medium Hand-coloured engraving on laid paper
Picture The most surprising CATARACT of NIAGARA in Canada
Paper size 14 1/4 x 9 in.
Platemark size 11.25 x 7.5 in.
Notes The print shows the Waterfall of Niagara. It was based upon a plate by anonymous Dutch artist from a book of LOUIS HENNEPIN (1626-1705) Nouvelle découverte d’un très grand pays situé dans l’Amérique, entre le Nouveau Mexique, et la Mer Glaciale (published in Utrecht: Guillaume Broedelet, 1697). That was the first engraved view of the Niagara Falls. Hancock in his engraving followed the original 1697 engraving closely, though with some changes (the three large pine trees are drawn on the lip of Goat Island, more spectators are added in the foreground, and people portaging goods along an incline are added on the right side of the plate).
The same print with different inscriptions on the margins was published for Millar’s New and Complete Universal System of Geography, London, 1782 (see Niagara Falls Public Library, Call number 17).
Condition Toning. Very small loss of paper around margins.
